The United States of America may celebrate its independence as a nation of July 4th, but many people of African descent in America also celebrate their own independence in June. States across the nation have been officially recognizing Juneteenth as the official end of slavery.
Savannah made an effort to join in on the nationwide festivities with the Savannah’s Juneteenth Festival, which is celebrated on June 11, 2016. Locals and visitors gathered at the Jepson Center for the Arts from 1pm-4pm to celebrate their freedom from slavery with special speakers, musical performances, activities, and other highlights celebrating African culture.
Savannah’s history came alive with gifted storytellers sharing insight into the past and what we all can learn to ensure a future of equality. There are not many events that teach us so many great lessons, while being so entertaining at the same time.
The event is run by a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting yesterday’s heritage to today’s generation to build a better tomorrow for all of us in the area.
