Savannah, Georgia’s History

Bonaventure Cemetery

Savannah is the oldest city in the state of Georgia and boasts a history that trumps all others in terms of romance, charm, and hospitality. Originally founded in 1733 by British colonists, the buildings left behind have been renovated, which means the town is often referred to as a living museum. Also considered America’s most haunted city, Savannah features many historic cemeteries and locals insistent on seeing ghosts. Despite Savannah, Georgia’s history and historical look, this town provides plenty of modern-day activities. Here are a few choice selections from us here at Hilton Head Cadillac Buick GMC.

  1. Carriage Tours – One of the best and most authentic ways to pass the time and see the sites is by hopping into an antique horse-drawn carriage. Carriage Tours of Savannah offers a memorable experience with the coachman telling tales of the city’s history. Each carriage can fit up to six adults so taking the family along for a ride is one way to spend the day.
  2. Bonaventure Cemetery – Coming in at over 150 years old, the Bonaventure Cemetery has been the inspiration for writers, poets, and filmmakers for decades. Originally owned by John Mullryne, the land became a public cemetery in 1907 and tours are conducted every weekend.
  3. Forsyth Park – Spanning 30 acres at the edge of the Historic District, the park features a two-tiered white cast-iron fountain that was built in 1858. The main site of concerts, sports, and sunbathing, Forsyth Park offers something for everyone.
